Chapter

Fourteen

Char had pocketed the ring and returned to the police station within ten minutes.

Gabe was still sitting at his desk, filling out paperwork and sipping on the same cold, stale cup of coffee.

“I’ve got something,” she said, taking her seat opposite him. Before he could even look up, she pulled the ring from her pocket and began. “I went over to Violet’s shop, and the door casing had been broken, and the door was open. Clearly, someone had gotten in that wasn’t supposed to be there.”

“Okay,” Gabe nodded. He put his pencil down and looked up. “What about that ring?”

“I’m getting to that. The front of the shop looked fine, but when I got to the back, Violet’s storage cooler was unplugged, the cord coiled up neatly on the floor. She would never do that because of what it would do to the flowers inside. Next, I opened the cooler door, and Gabe, you would not believe the smell. I hope you never smell anything so bad in your life.”

Gabe grinned. “I’m a police officer, Char. I’m pretty sure I’ve already smelled some things that surpass a few dead flowers.”

“It wasn’t just a few,” Char continued, her face giving a visual reenactment of the moment she’d been hit with the smell from the cooler of death. “It was thousands, all dying on their stems. Absolutely putrid.”

Gabe’s grin turned to smirk. “It sounds awful,” he patronized, trying not to chuckle.

“I’d like to see you stand where I was standing and not lose your cookies all over, Mr. Big Police Officer Man,” Char fired back.

“Maybe someday, I’ll be unfortunate enough to experience such a tragedy. But for now, I just need you to get on with things.”

“Fine,” Char huffed. “I found this ring inside the cooler. It’s a huge diamond. I was pretty sure no one in town could afford such a large rock. So, I picked it up and looked inside the band.” She handed the ring over to Gabe. “Do you see that name in there?”

Gabe took the ring in his thick finger and moved it around in a few different positions, trying to get a better look at it. He squinted, trying to read the small words. “I give up,” he finally sighed. “What does it say?”

“It says Lady Annalise,” Char’s eyes widened like she’d just revealed the biggest clue anyone had ever uncovered.

“Who?” Gabe asked.

“Honestly,” Char said, finding it difficult to contain her frustration, “she’s the bride-to-be in the wedding that’s completely unraveling Avalon! You’re the police chief. How do you not know her name?”

“I didn’t know the fella’s name until a few hours ago when I went to have a look at his body and make the arrest.”

“How do you not know these things, Gabe?”

“They’re not important to the job I have to do. My job is to keep people safe. I don’t need to know their names to do that.” He shifted in his seat. “And furthermore, I’m not planning on seeing these people ever again.”

“Ugh,” Char grunted.
